SIDP Background:
The Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP) is an association of health professionals dedicated to promoting the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. The Society's diverse membership is comprised of pharmacists and other allied health care professionals who are concerned with widely varied aspects of antimicrobial use in settings which include clinical patient care, research, teaching, the pharmaceutical industry, and government.
The Society was formed in 1990 with a vision to support the growing numbers of pharmacists dedicated to practicing, teaching and performing research in the area of infectious diseases. Since its inception, the Society has supported concept of the appropriate use of antimicrobials through educational efforts, sponsored research and a variety of post-graduate training programs. In addition, SIDP continues to collaborate with a number of other healthcare organizations such as the American Society for Microbiology, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society of Healthcare and Epidemiology of America to provide co-sponsored programming aimed at the appropriate use of antimicrobials and limiting the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
Members of SIDP have
represented the Society as integral parts of major national and international
regulatory and decision making committees on antimicrobials including the
Anti-Infective and Anti-Viral Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA, Therapeutic
Working Committees on Antimicrobial Resistance with the CDC, Panel members for
committees on the treatment of HIV infection for the Department of Health and
Human Services, and on national and international consensus conferences on
antimicrobial resistance.
