CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS
2010.08.24

Dear Colleague:

The Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP) is an organization founded in 1990 and
consists of over 400 pharmacists whose primary work emphasis is antimicrobial therapy.
Members practice in a variety of practice settings. These decision-makers help construct
antimicrobial formularies, develop and implement policy on antimicrobial utilization, provide
education (to students, practitioners, and the public) on antibiotic pharmacology and appropriate
use, conduct research on anti-infective therapy, and publish abstracts, articles, and book
chapters in the medical literature.

In addition to recognizing excellence within its membership, the society conducts a variety of
educational and research initiatives for its members on an annual basis. To support such
programs, SIDP solicits funding from pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare vendors.
Often, funding comes in the form of educational grants through companies’ Professional Affairs
divisions. In other cases, funding may come from sales and/or marketing divisions.

Existing opportunities for our sponsoring partners to support 2009-2010 activities are as follows:

Opportunity - SIDP Annual Meeting held in conjunction with ICAAC
Description - Approximately 200 SIDP members attend the full day Annual Meeting.
During the breaks, posters summarizing research of past awards are presented. This
break and the reception and dinner period also offers an opportunity for industry sponsors
to interact with SIDP members and guests. Funding support is used for continuing
education for pharmacists, room rental, AV needs, speaker support, member awards,
refreshment breaks, a reception and dinner.
Estimated Expenses - $60,000-70,000

Opportunity - Reception in conjunction with IDSA Annual Meeting
Description - SIDP sponsors a 3-4 hour evening reception for pharmacists (SIDP
members and nonmembers) who are attending the IDSA Annual Meeting. During the
reception, industry sponsors will have the opportunity to and interact with SIDP members
and guests.
Estimated Expenses - $30,000

Opportunity - Postgraduate Residencies in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy
Description - SIDP supports postgraduate education in Infectious Diseases Pharmacy.
The SIDP Board of Directors reviews all applications. Funds support the resident’s
salary/fringe benefits and travel to attend ICAAC and the SIDP Annual Meeting as well as a
small administrative fee. Typically, a single sponsor funds each individual residency.
Estimated Expenses - $45,000 per residency

Opportunity - Research Awards
Description - SIDP supports original research in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy
through research awards to members. Research proposals are peer-reviewed by a
committee of highly qualified SIDP members and proposals are ranked based on the
quality of the science. Industry support of these awards is announced via email, quarterly
newsletter and in the SIDP Annual Report. Research results are presented at the SIDP
Annual Meeting. Any research presented in other venues must include acknowledgement
of SIDP and industry support. Normally, contributions from industry (usually unrestricted
grants) total $75-100,000, with $10,000-50,000 coming from any one company. Grants
from industry of $15,000 or greater are treated as distinct awards. Industry sponsors may
express preference for an area of research along with their support, if desired.

Opportunity - Minisabbaticals
Description - Each year, SIDP offers opportunities for 1-2 of its members to create and participate in a minisabbatical that will allow the member to acquire new practice or research skills and techniques. Funding for these programs are limited to laboratory supplies needed for research, travel and living expenses for two weeks.
Estimated Expenses - Total $8,000-10,000. ($4,000-5,000 to each recipient)

Opportunity - Recognition Awards
Description - Each summer, SIDP recognizes excellence in professional performance through recognition awards presented to individuals with notable past accomplishments. These awards include: Young Investigator Award; Best Publication Award; and Outstanding Practitioner Award.
Estimated Expenses - Award Program Total: $6,000. Each recipient receives a plaque and $1,500 award.

Opportunity - Website Page Sponsorship
Description – The SIDP website, www.SIDP.org is available for sponsorship, with a corporate logo displayed prominently at the bottom of each page. In a typical month, SIDP.org has 3,000 visits, 15,000 page views, and 40,000 hits with an average of 5 pages viewed per person. Funding helps to support website maintenance and management. One-year sponsorships are offered. A maximum of three sponsors will be accepted per year. A hyperlink from the sponsors’ featured logo to the sponsors’ corporate website is included.
Estimated Expenses - $5,000 per year

Opportunity - Annual Board of Directors Meeting
Description - Each summer, SIDP’s officers attend a one-day, business meeting held at a central location to summarize and approve the year’s business events and finalize plans for the SIDP Annual Meeting and IDSA reception. Funding supports air travel, meeting room rental, and lunch. Industry support is acknowledged at the SIDP Annual Meeting.
Estimated Expenses - $10,000-12,000

In summary, SIDP’s activities require over $240,000 in external support annually. SIDP has always enjoyed and appreciated support from industry to fund pharmacists’ training and research endeavors, and to recognize excellence by its members. We hope you will be able to support our efforts, and look forward to working with you to explore funding opportunities by your company.
If requests for company funding are to be made online, I would appreciate your communicating the appropriate information and process to me.

Sincerely,
David S. Burgess, Pharm.D., FCCP
President, SIDP
