Description:
Join us for Part 3 of our Diagnostic Stewardship webinar series on Blood Stream Infections!
Bloodstream infections are a frequent cause of hospital morbidity and mortality. However, navigating positive blood cultures can be a challenge. Some organisms are contaminants, and overtreatment of a positive culture can lead to adverse effects. On the other hand, some organisms are almost always considered pathogens and there are differences in recommendations related to repeat blood cultures based on the specific pathogen that is isolated.
This interprofessional education session will enhance participants’ understanding of the clinical utility and limitations of diagnostic tools for bloodstream infections, emphasizing evidence-based practices that balance diagnostic value, patient safety, and antimicrobial stewardship principles. Through improved alignment of diagnostic decisions across the healthcare team, participants will strengthen collaboration and optimize patient outcomes.
Agenda:
Following introductions, speakers will use of diagnostic testing for blood stream infections with a focus on diagnostic stewardship. The session will end with attendee Q&A.
Target Audience: An interprofessional audience, specifically pharmacists and physicians, involved in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. The content may also apply to advanced practice providers, nurses, microbiologists, infection preventionists, and other healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe current blood culture diagnostic stewardship evidence
- Apply rapid diagnostics, repeat blood culturing guidance, and antibiotic stewardship principles
- Review evidence supporting clinical decision support tools
- Compare and contrast successes and challenges of implementation
