Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Research Fellowship

Research & Quality Improvement

The fellow will gain experience working on research protocols and quality improvement projects specifically related to development, implementation, and analysis of antimicrobial stewardship-related projects within the VA system.   Additionally, the fellow may work on multi-year funded Infectious Diseases grants as well as collaborating nationally on projects for the VA Antimicrobial Stewardship Task Force (ASTF).

The fellow will be required to develop a competitive research proposal for funding and submit at least one manuscript as first author. Other research-related activities include data analysis and preparation of manuscript(s) for publication.

• Decreasing Pneumonia Duration of Therapy (ASHP Foundation)
• Cognitive Support Informatics for Antimicrobial Stewardship (VA HSR&D)
• Improving Acute Respiratory Use through Implementation and Evaluation of Core Elements of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship (CDC)
• Development of a Spectrum Score to Measure Antibiotic De-escalation in Healthcare Associated Pneumonia (NIH)

Clinical & Teaching Activities

Clinical activities will be limited in scope to those related to those to the Antimicrobial Stewardship program including periodic rounding and reporting of stewardship metrics. The fellow has the option to gain experience in travel vaccine and HIV clinic appointments under the direction of the ID Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and working on (local) quality improvement projects. Teaching will be limited to advanced practice experiences and didactic opportunities on stewardship-related topics.  Inpatient weekend staffing may also be available (if desired).
